Resolution-ish

Don't you just love it when something falls into your lap that you didn't even know you were looking for? Me too. I had made it all the way to January 6 without making any resolutions, but then I read this article from Hip Green Scene about the best places to eat, drink, shop, and be entertained in Raleigh and it got me inspired!

Beginning (but hopefully not ending) in 2015, I want to live like a tourist in my own town. My house is 30 minutes from Downtown Raleigh and I'm guilty of acting like it doesn't even exist. Tragic, I know. I will start small by shaking up my dining habits, but I'm hoping this will also encourage me and my family to explore museums, galleries, parks, shops, and more.

My goal is to schedule a date - with my hubby, friends or co-workers - to eat at a restaurant from the article at least once a month. I would love to visit one a week, but I need to be realistic about my schedule and my budget. Yummy, local food doesn't come cheap!

To keep track I created a food passport, which I'm pretty sure I saw on Pinterest. The gist is this:
- Get a small notebook to be your food passport.
- Decorate with as many patterns of washi tape as will pass for reasonable (optional, but not really).
- Create an entry for each restaurant you plan to try with fields for date visited, dishes ordered, rating and comments.
- Fill in the appropriate page as you experience each new restaurant.
- Share on Instagram because you just can't stop yourself.

Speaking of Instagram, you can follow along with this experiment by following me (@allisonharris) or searching #foodpassport.

Don't you want to play along?

P.S. Hip Green Scene has travel guides for lots of nearby towns, including Durham, Asheville and Charleston. Check them out!

Kids, What Kids?

A month ago Steven and I spent a wonderful, relaxing week in the Dominican Republic. It was relaxing because we took it... wait for it... without the kids. I know, right? I'm jealous of me, too.

Before you think I'm heartless and cruel for pawning my kids off on someone else, they actually had plans before we did. Allow me to give you a quick reenactment:

Steven's Parents and Grandparents: We're going to go to Florida for a week in May, and we want to take the kids. Is that OK with you?
Steven: And we're not invited?
Steven's Parents and Grandparents: No, just the kids.
Steven: Fine by me.

There may or may not have been lots of of high fiving and emailing of travel agents as soon as we got off the phone.

I won't bore you with page after page of descriptive paragraphs. Instead, I'll let the photos do the talking. And, yes, this doesn't really have anything to do with my kids so it probably doesn't belong on the blog about my kids. But guess what? I'm in charge here, so there's nothing you can do about it. Ha!

All the ground floor rooms had a patio and personal hammock. Cute husband is not included. He's with me.

This is the view from the aforementioned personal hammock.

Since it was our anniversary, we got this sash on our door. I cringed every time I saw it, because to me it really said "Warning, these people maybe be doing it at this very moment!"

Me and my hubby - I think this one's getting framed.

This place was so beautiful, it didn't even seem real.

Little old me, in the great blue ocean.

The resort had a huge, meandering pool with different zones. The zone pictured here had a shallow ledge with chairs that were set in the water. This was perfect for keeping your hands dry - very important for poolside reading - but you could put your feet in the water to cool off. If we ever put in a pool, I'm totally stealing this idea.

The pool also had a swim-up bar. As you can see, pool floats make excellent cocktail tables.

Enjoying my treat from the swim-up bar. On a completely unrelated note, I am not obsessed with mango daiquiris.

The resort was full of beautiful native flowers. This is just one of many nature photos I took.

The pool and beachfront had thatched-roof huts, and we learned on Day 1 that you have to get up early to claim one. They go quickly, and for good reason. They provide shade, obviously, but they're also waterproof and protect you from sudden thunderstorms, which aren't uncommon. I felt very smug as other guests went scurrying away from the rain while I stayed put, kept reading, and ordered another cocktail.

Speaking of beverages, our room's mini-bar had glass bottle sodas (restocked daily!) and it is a proven fact that sodas taste better from a glass bottle.

On a boat, headed to Excursion #1, Reef Explorer, where we snorkeled, played in the water and got mini-massages.

Me, kayaking at Reef Explorer

Steven, paddle boarding at Reef Explorer

Tired, but happy

I've got on all my gear for Excursion #2, mud buggies!

Mud buggies stop 1, where I am quite relieved to rinse off some mud in the ocean.

Admiring my very dirty feet at mud buggies stop 2, where we also bought some souvenirs.

Our trusty steed

If you want to know how dirty we got, this bag was bright blue when we started. And no, we still haven't gotten all of the mud out.
After being covered in mud, nothing feels better than a long shower and a dip in the pool.

We spent several evenings at the resort's casino and did rather well for ourselves. I think we made around $75 over the course of the week.
The terrain in the mountains and foothills was beautiful.

Excursion #3, zip-lining! It looks just like this, only with more straps and harnesses.

See? Lots of straps and harnesses. These photos were taken by the guide group, obviously. I don't normally shell out money for the photo package, but in this case we had no way of taking photos of ourselves, so it was worth it.

This is the souvenir I bought for myself; a larimar jewelry set, which is native to DR. Even better, I accidentally haggled the price from $35 to $20. Score!

Word of warning: if you plan on going to DR (or anywhere tropical, I would assume) pack bug spray and use it!

Steven says his last good-bye to the ocean.

These are our "I don't want to go home" faces.

All in all, I would highly recommend everything about this trip. It was great just the two of us, but this would also be a great destination to visit with friends and family. I have listed some key info below, but if you have any questions leave a comment and I'll try to help you out!

Resort
Excellence Punta Cana
- The food and service are excellent
- This is an adults-only resort, which I recommend. If I'm not bringing my kids, I don't want to see your kids, either.
- All food and drinks, including cocktails and room service, is all inclusive. The only thing we paid out-of-pocket for was excursions and souvenirs.

Travel
Liberty Travel
Shayna Leverton levertons@libertytravel.com
- This was our first time using a travel agent and I am hooked for life. Shayna is in NYC, but that wasn't a problem since everything is done over the phone or email. We just told her we wanted someplace warm and all inclusive and she gave us some great options.

Excursions
Olympus Tours
- You can book with them through your travel agent before you leave (which we did for 1 excursion) or you can book with them directly at the resort (which we did for the other 2). Both are equally easy.
- They are very flexible. You can reschedule your activities as needed, which we had to do. I got sunburned on the first day, and we delayed the zip-lining. Sunburn + harness = not good.
- They are also super friendly. I felt comfortable and safe being shuttled around the island away from the resort.
- They also provided our airport shuttle. This was a great thing to book, because the last thing you want to do is hail a cab at a Spanish-speaking airport when you are exhausted from air travel.

Obviously this isn't a sponsored post. If you think I'm getting free or cheap trips just so I'll blog about it, you must be new here. Sit down and stay awhile!

Wherein Luke Cons Me Into Playing With Him, and I Con Him Into Leaving Me Alone

While fitting with the theme, I thought this was a bit long for a Funny Friday post.

Luke: Mommy, will you play with me?
Me: I would love to, but I'm about to take a shower. I bet bunny and turtle would like to play.
Luke: Yeah, but I can only play with grown-ups.
Me: I'm sorry. I'll play with you after my shower. Can I give you a kiss instead?
Luke: thinks Yes.
I give him a kiss on the forehead, Luke rubs it
Me: Don't wipe away my kiss!
Luke: I'm not. Kisses turn into sunscreen and I'm just getting ready for the beach.
Me: Oh, ok. Here's lots more sunscreen. lots of kisses, lots of rubbing in Now, how about a butterfly kiss? I give him a butterfly kiss on the cheek
Luke: No, butterfly kisses turn into spines. You have to give me a butterfly kiss on my back.
Me: Ok. I do as he asks There, now you have a spine on your back. But what about the one on your face?
Luke: What?
Me: I gave you a butterfly kiss on your cheek, which means you have a spine on your cheek.
Luke: Oh no! What do I do?
Me: The only way to cure face spines is to hop like a bunny, all the way to your room, and read a book. When you do that the face spine will go away.
Luke: Ok. I'm hopping like a bunny!

Expecting Again - How We Told People

I always like to hear how people share big new with their loved ones. In case you're like me, you might enjoy hearing how we spilled the beans...

The Hubby
I took a home pregnancy test on Thanksgiving day and it was positive! I had taken a test 4 days prior - negative - so Steven had no reason to think there would be any announcement that month. I was still convinced something was up, so I waited until the next morning we were all home together and tried again. While I was seeing the fateful double-stripe, Steven was on the couch with his laptop. I pulled Luke aside and whispered Tell Daddy "Gonna have another baby." Luke ran into the living room shouting the news while I waited in the nursery. It would have been really cute, but Steven thought he said "Wanna have another baby" which prompted a response of "I know, we're trying!" "No," I said, "listen carefully." He finally got the message, found me in the nursery and said "Cool." That's my hubby - only shows excitement over sports.

My Mom
We had hoped to tell both sets of parents at Christmas - to avoid any drama over who knew what first - but my Mom and step-dad had already made plans to spend the holiday in Florida with my step-sis and her family. So we invited them out for breakfast the day they were leaving, so "Luke could see them one last time" but mostly so we could tell them about the baby. After we ordered I said "Oh, I have something I wanted to show you so let me do it now before I forget." Then, as casually as if I were rummaging for a coupon or receipt, I pulled out an ultrasound photo and threw it on the table without a word. It took a second, but then the squealing and crying (all from my mom) kicked in.

Hubby's Parents, Grandparents, Sister
My in-laws got to find out for Christmas, just as we intended. Steven's side of the family opens wrapped gifts after Christmas Eve dinner (Santa gifts are opened Christmas morning) and we prepared a special gift, to be opened toward the end of the evening: 2 newborn onesies:

and

My Grandparents, Aunt, Uncle, Cousins
The day after Christmas our family of 3 went to my uncle's house to see him, his wife, my cousins and my grandparents. We dressed Luke in a "Big Brother" t-shirt, unzipped his hoodie and waited for someone to notice. It didn't take long before my eagle-eyed aunt spotted it!

A Co-Worker/Friend
I waited until mid-February to tell anybody at work, but the day after I told my boss my friend came to my desk and said "Last night I had the weirdest dream that you were pregnant." I was already planning on telling her that day, so I jumped at the opportunity and said "It's funny, because it's true!" She had to sit down she was so in shock! I had no idea I worked with a psychic. Heh.

Snow Day

On Saturday my neck of the woods got a little snow storm. Nothing hung around or made the roads dangerous (thank goodness) but it was beautiful while it lasted. We had some of the biggest snowflakes I've ever seen! Steven was at a basketball game, so Luke and I were on our own for the winter fun.

even the humblest neighborhoods looks beautiful with a blanket of snow
home sweet snow-covered home
my little guy - can you spot the heart shaped snowflake on his chest?
cheese!
we built a tiny snowman, complete with a tiny leaf hat...
...and then Luke wanted to make him clap
the gorgeous view courtesy of my rear neighbor's spacious lawn
I was trying to get him to look up at me and he giggled every time a snowflake landed on his face
trying to catch a snowflake
then we came inside, got (back) into our warm pj's and my little assistant helped with some laundry

Speaking of laundry, please don't judge my ghetto fabulous laundry room and mis-matched appliances. We can't all live the Pinterest life. At least my hangers match!

What did you do last weekend? Did you venture out or did you watch the weather from within?

Fall Fun

We've been doing all sorts of fun things to get in the fall spirit!

Last Saturday we visited a pumpkin farm near our house where we got a big pumpkin for carving, and a "Luke-sized pumpkin" for our little guy.

The next day we went to the State Fair where we rode rides, ate fried food, and cheered on the racing pigs. Of course Luke's favorite parts were the petting farm - we went through twice - where he actually touched the animals this year (unlike last year) and the waterfall fountain, which isn't technically part of the fair since it's on the fairgrounds year round.

The following Thursday was my birthday so Luke got in some quality time with my Granddaddy at the Cheesecake Factory.

On Saturday I threw myself a birthday party, complete with a pony keg, and Luke was kind enough to help me set it up.

By Sunday it was high time we carved our pumpkin if we wanted a jack-o-lantern for Halloween night. Luke helped dig out the guts (not really) and then took a seat inside the freshly cleaned pumpkin.

I'll be back in a few days with pics of Luke in his costume. Here's a hint: he'll be super cute!
