Luke: reaching for my hand across the dinner table I think you're perfect.
Me: Did Daddy tell you to say that?
Luke: Nope.
Me: Aww, that's so sweet.
Steven: And now he knows how to get anything from you.

Luke was wearing his lobster towel after his bath
Steven: Mommy, can you get this lobster dressed for bed?
Luke: I'm not a lobster! I'm trying to be a boy.
A Load Off My Mind
When I shared my 20 week update 2 weeks ago I wasn't 100% honest with you guys. I didn't tell any lies, but I didn't tell the whole truth, either.
As many of you know, the anatomy ultrasound takes around 30 minutes and the tech measures various parts of baby's body: heart, head, abdomen, arm and leg bones, etc. It's not just about revealing gender!
In my case my midwife discovered 2 things that were less than ideal, but the midwife explained that both issues were likely to go away on their own. Just to be on the safe side I had a follow-up Level 2 ultrasound (which I also had for Luke, for different reasons) with a specialist. We didn't share this news at the time because Steven and I didn't want to worry everybody over nothing. I'm sharing it now because we're confident there's nothing to worry about. I guess I could keep this to myself and no one would know the difference, but I want to document the pregnancy - good, bad, and ugly.
Issue #1 - Choroid Plexus Cyst
A CPC is a small pocket of brain and spinal fluid that gets trapped while the baby's brain is forming. A CPC could be a marker for Trisomy 18, if accompanied by other fetal defects, or it could be nothing and go away on its own. Kind of like how you get air bubbles trapped on your new screen protector, but they eventually work their way out.
The 20 week ultrasound showed 1 cyst and no other defects. The Level 2 ultrasound found no fetal defects and no remaining cysts. So either the original tech misread the scan or, more likely, the cyst was there at 20 weeks and reabsorbed on its own like my midwife said it would. The specialist OB gave me the option of further testing - a blood test and/or an amnio - but he saw no reason to be alarmed and thought the tests would only be for my peace of mind. I declined the testing because a) I'd rather not dig too deeply into things like that, b) I hate needles and c) I'm cheap. However, if the OB had deemed them necessary I would get the test without compliant.
Issue #2 - Placenta Previa
Having a placenta previa means the placenta is sitting directly over the cervix, blocking baby's only way out. All placentas sit over the cervix at first, but most will eventually move out of the way. According to my midwife roughly half move by 17-20 weeks, and the other half move a few weeks later. In the rare chance mine was to never move it would cause no harm to the baby, but it would mean a scheduled C-Section for me.
The 20 week ultrasound showed me at full previa position. No bueno. The Level 2 ultrasound showed that the placenta had moved and just a tiny bit of it was still blocking the cervix. Woo hoo! Keep your fingers crossed that it keeps moving in the right direction, but I think I'm out of the woods on that one.
The plan is to monitor the placenta with an ultrasound every 4 weeks, but I'm hopeful the midwives will soon be satisfied with its position.
Please note I didn't include links to info on either of these conditions. If you choose to google them, do so at your own risk. My midwife strongly urged me not to research them because I would scare myself silly with worst-case scenarios. I didn't and I'm glad I stayed ignorant on this one.

Perfect?
Luke comes off as charming and funny on-line, and those that know him in person tell me he's smart and well-behaved. Obviously I agree, but I'm not a reliable source.
Just in case you think he's turning out so well because I'm the perfect parent that does no wrong, how about a dose of keepin' it real?
Needless to say he cried and wasn't very happy with me. Parent of the year, right here.
P.S. Steven just felt the baby kick for the first time!
Children's Orchard
Over the weekend I set out to buy Luke some new clothes. The boy has grown out of his 2T pants overnight! My usual suspects for this type of trip are Target and Old Navy, sometimes Kohl's, but this time I stopped to check out Children's Orchard. They're a small chain of children's consignment stores and luckily for me the NC location isn't far from my house.
As soon as I walked in I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Well organized and well-labeled - a must for consignment and thrift stores! - I walked right to the Boys' 3T section. All the clothes were in good condition, most pieces were $3 or less, and they had many of the big brands - Carter's, Gymboree, Osh Kosh, Children's Place, and more. I loaded up with t-shirts, shorts and pants - all elastic waist since we're potty-training - and now we're all set for spring and summer! The damage to my wallet? Only $60 for 8 tops and 9 bottoms! OK, I stopped at Target to get a few more things, but this was the bulk of it.
I cruised around the other departments - newborn/infant, shoes, toys, travel gear - but didn't buy anything. I didn't spend much time looking at girls' clothes, but the selection seemed to be just as good as boys' clothes.
I'll probably try selling some items once I know we're done with them, but I'm going to hoard all my baby gear and clothes until we close up shop. You never know what you'll need again. In the meantime I'll definitely be going back and you should, too!
Note: This is not a sponsored post. I just really liked shopping here!

Updates to the House
This started as a tangent within my 20 week post, but it started to get a bit lengthy so I moved it off by itself.
We've been in our house since November 2009, and when we bought it we had every intention of living here with 2, maybe 3 kids. Lots of people had, and still have, bigger families in smaller houses so that should be no problem, right? There's a lot we like about this house: the big shed in the backyard, the garden and rain barrels we've built, our awesome neighbors, the close proximity to our family, and the fact that we already live here and (mostly) like how it's decorated. As Luke got older and we started to accumulate stuff, it became more and more apparent that our house has enough rooms (3 bedrooms, 2 baths) but not enough storage, particularly in the kitchen.
Once Baby #2 became an impending reality I got all panicky and twitchy about the reality of having 2 kids, plus 2 kids' worth of STUFF, in this house. I immediately insisted we look at buying a bigger house. We looked around, we found some we liked, but the reality of up-sizing meant we would have a very tight budget to accomodate a bigger mortgage payment. We could swing it, and we even accounted for all the added costs we could think of - extra utility bills for more square footage, the cost of 2 kids in day care if Grandma decided she wanted to scale back on watching them, etc - but at the end of the day it just doesn't make sense right now. So we'll stay put for a few more years then revisit the idea of moving.
But what does that mean for the house we're in now? It means I have to maximize storage like I've never done before.
Here's the to-do list:
- add a pull-down ladder to the attic access panel, lay down plywood and "build" block and board shelving so we can actually use our attic as accessible storage.
- load up the new attic shelves with rarely-used items from the kitchen (like the electric skillet, fondue pot, cake decorating supplies) to make room in the cabinets and pantry
- de-clutter and purge the wine bar, china cabinet, kitchen cabinets and pantry
- replace the too-small kitchen island cart with a larger one to increase storage
- buy and install storage rail (hello, Ikea trip!) under one run of upper cabinets to house eating utensils
- buy and install cabinet pull-out thing so I can finally reach the back of my dang corner cabinet
- buy lidded storage bins to go on top of the upper cabinets to house surplus/bulk food items (we got a BJ's membership for Christmas and haven't used it yet because we have nowhere to keep back stock!)
The list may seem long, and not particularly cheap, but it is worlds cheaper than the process of buying a new house. At least that's what I keep telling my husband. Hopefully I will have some items to sell on Craigslist or at a yard sale to offset some of the costs.
Luckily for me, we already moved Luke into the front bedroom last summer when we was too big for his crib and over Christmas we finally got all of his clothes out of the nursery and into his big-boy room. This leaves the nursery empty and ready for another baby. We're not going to change anything about the layout or decorations, other than adding a second tea towel calendar to mark a new birthday in the family. I still have to get the baby clothes out of storage and wash them, but they will just go into the same dresser they were in the first time. No changes there.
It's a lot to get done in the next 20 weeks, but I've already gotten started. Ordered the new island last week! Once the nesting kicks in that will work in my favor, but I know you guys want to come help me anyway!

Half-Way There!
As of yesterday I am 20 weeks and now in the second half of this pregnancy!
The first half seemed to fly by, and I'm a little terrified that my due date will be here before I know it. I have a lot to get done between now and then:
- work trip and music festival, back-to-back in April
- anniversary/baby-moon/finally passed all our AREs* trip to Savannah in May
- plan and execute Luke's 3rd birthday party
- whip the house into shape to make room for another kiddo
*ARE = Architectural Registration Exam. There are 7 total (yes 7) and we took the first one when I was 8 months pregnant with Luke, and took the last one when I was 8 weeks pregnant with Baby #2.
Maternity Clothes: All day, every day. Nothing but maternity pants from here on out. I'm big enough to wear most of my maternity tops/dresses now, but I have a few regular shirts that still fit. I'm trying to wear them now, while I still can, because I know at the end I will be down to a rotation of the same 6 shirts that are big enough for a 40+ week belly.
Small success: When I unboxed my stash of maternity clothes all of my pants (and some of the tops) were too big! I've lost weight since I was pregnant with Luke so I've gone down a size in maternity pants. I've bought a few pairs of pants for myself, but a friend of mine let me go through her stash, so now I have a decent wardrobe again. Thanks, Kelli!
Cravings/Aversions: I've been craving Gatorade (which I drink constantly) and sushi (which I can't have). What's up with that? I still can't stand the smell of seafood.
Symptoms: Heartburn and indigestion, mild but chronic back pain. I'm sleeping well, for the most part, but I've had some night sweats and insane pregnancy dreams. I can tell my pelvis has loosened and I've started to walk funny. When I sit or lay down, it always feels like something's in the wrong place. No Braxton Hicks contractions yet but I have "growing pains" multiple times a day. I can feel the baby kicking and it won't be much longer before others will get to feel it too!
OB Appointments: Yesterday was my 20 week check-up and anatomy ultrasound. We opted not to learn the gender, but other than that the baby looks normal. I learned that for second-time moms, pregnancy will be a little different than the first time because your body is looser, in every since of the word. This usually means more discomfort, earlier start of labor, shorter labor and slightly bigger baby. Nothing I can't handle. I was a bit concerned that the baby seemed to always have his/her hands and arms up around the face. Not a medical crisis, but Luke favored that position and came out elbow-first, causing quite a bit of tearing for me. According to the midwife an elbow-first birthing position is common, but if it happens again it will be less painful for me since everything is already stretched out. Not a fun visual, but it makes me feel better.

Expecting Again - How We Told People
I always like to hear how people share big new with their loved ones. In case you're like me, you might enjoy hearing how we spilled the beans...
The Hubby
I took a home pregnancy test on Thanksgiving day and it was positive! I had taken a test 4 days prior - negative - so Steven had no reason to think there would be any announcement that month. I was still convinced something was up, so I waited until the next morning we were all home together and tried again. While I was seeing the fateful double-stripe, Steven was on the couch with his laptop. I pulled Luke aside and whispered Tell Daddy "Gonna have another baby." Luke ran into the living room shouting the news while I waited in the nursery. It would have been really cute, but Steven thought he said "Wanna have another baby" which prompted a response of "I know, we're trying!" "No," I said, "listen carefully." He finally got the message, found me in the nursery and said "Cool." That's my hubby - only shows excitement over sports.
My Mom
We had hoped to tell both sets of parents at Christmas - to avoid any drama over who knew what first - but my Mom and step-dad had already made plans to spend the holiday in Florida with my step-sis and her family. So we invited them out for breakfast the day they were leaving, so "Luke could see them one last time" but mostly so we could tell them about the baby. After we ordered I said "Oh, I have something I wanted to show you so let me do it now before I forget." Then, as casually as if I were rummaging for a coupon or receipt, I pulled out an ultrasound photo and threw it on the table without a word. It took a second, but then the squealing and crying (all from my mom) kicked in.
Hubby's Parents, Grandparents, Sister
My in-laws got to find out for Christmas, just as we intended. Steven's side of the family opens wrapped gifts after Christmas Eve dinner (Santa gifts are opened Christmas morning) and we prepared a special gift, to be opened toward the end of the evening: 2 newborn onesies:
and
My Grandparents, Aunt, Uncle, Cousins
The day after Christmas our family of 3 went to my uncle's house to see him, his wife, my cousins and my grandparents. We dressed Luke in a "Big Brother" t-shirt, unzipped his hoodie and waited for someone to notice. It didn't take long before my eagle-eyed aunt spotted it!
A Co-Worker/Friend
I waited until mid-February to tell anybody at work, but the day after I told my boss my friend came to my desk and said "Last night I had the weirdest dream that you were pregnant." I was already planning on telling her that day, so I jumped at the opportunity and said "It's funny, because it's true!" She had to sit down she was so in shock! I had no idea I worked with a psychic. Heh.
